New “Friendly Wi-Fi” zone in Tirana

18 July 2019, Tirana - UNICEF and Municipality of Tirana inaugurated a new “Friendly Wi-Fi” spot at the “Murat Toptani” pedestrian area. This is the second venue in the city of Tirana enabling children and families to surf free wi-fi while being safe and protected online.

Education and awareness-raising – around online safety and online harms is important. For this, educational games and recreational activities were organized, and crucial information was shared with children, adolescents, parents, and teachers, from various age groups on how the “Friendly Wi-Fi” works.

“Friendly Wi-Fi” is a certification service, which originates from the UK, and ensures that internet content is filtered from illegal and pornographic materials. Brough to Albania by UNICEF and Friendly Wi-Fi UK, this initiative is a result of its flagship program on children’s safety online and aims to offer families and children with a safer and more appropriate alternative to navigate the internet.

Roberto De Bernardi, UNICEF Representative thanked the Municipality of Tirana and ABCOM for their contribution to expanding the “Friendly WI FI” zones in Tirana, to ensure the protection of children from the dangers and risks posed by the internet.

The representative of Tirana Municipality Emir Puka stated that this initiative will help other public Wi-Fi networks in Tirana to become more “child-friendly”. In collaboration with ABCOM, parents, and children feel safer because child sexual abuse images, harmful content, and pornography are no longer accessible.

With the financial support of the Global Fund to End Violence Against Children, UNICEF will continue to expand the “Friendly Wi-Fi” concept to other safe internet access points in the main cities of the country, aiming at the active engagement of children and families as they have proven to be the key change-makers.
